ALMA’s responsible action against fake malaria drugs

To: H.E. Ambassador Marjon Kamara, Chair Steering Committee The African Leaders Malaria Alliance

Date

Dear Mrs Kamara,

The ALMA coalition of African Heads of states is invaluable to the elimination of malaria in Africa. We applaud the progress ALMA has achieved so far.

African nations face a serious threat to the treatment of malaria as fake malaria drugs from China and India are flooding their markets.

The overall situation is gruesome. At this moment, 1/3 of all malaria drugs sold in Africa are fake and kill hundreds of innocent children every day. Dying from disease may be inevitable, dying from medicine should never be.

We have called upon the Chinese and Indian Governments to take their responsibility in stopping the illegal production and export of these killer drugs.

African nations have been strengthening their efforts to control the quality of imported malaria drugs. Drug Regulatory Boards received training with support from the World Health Organisation. Techniques to check the authenticity of drugs are being developed and implemented.

Right now, a commitment of African Heads of States is needed to stop the import and illegal trade of fake drugs. As a result millions of lives will be saved.

We therefore strongly urge ALMA to include specific actions and goals to combat fake malaria drugs on the ALMA Scorecard for Accountability and Action and support countries in the fight against fake malaria drugs.

We count on your swift action.

Yours sincerely,

(Your name, city, country)

China’s responsible action against fake malaria drugs

To:
Mr Xi Jinpinggh, Honourable Prime Minister of China

Date

Dear Dr Jinpinggh,

China is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. It is known for its hard working people, technical development, cultural heritage, a.o.

The illegal mass production and export of fake malaria drugs from China to Africa, casts a dark shadow over the international reputation of your country. Wouldn’t you agree that in such a beautiful, modern nation that has so much to offer to the world, these criminal practices are entirely out of place?

We therefor call upon the Government of China to stop the criminals that produce and export fake malaria drugs to Africa.

1/3 of all malaria drugs sold in Africa are fake and kill hundreds of innocent children every day. During the past year, 250.000 children have lost their lives due to fake malaria drugs. The production and trade of these illegal killer drugs has to stop. Malaria drugs should save lives, not destroy them.

We count on your swift action. We would like to tell the world that the Chinese Government acted responsibly so that millions of lives will be saved.

Yours sincerely,
